Choosing a Reliable Builder

electricianBe sure to use a local builder who has been in business for several years in your area and who also has several local references.  Local builders are "always in the neighborhood" and are therefore much more accessible.  They are more likely to wrap up a job quicker since is it close by.

Do it yourself
Before doing it yourself, be sure to have a drawing of your project and a solid plan.  It is very important to take your time and do it right the first time.

You should break down the project into phases and try to map out a timeline for each phase of the work.  This will help to simplify the project especially if it is large and make it less daunting.  Identify the materials and tools you will need for each phase of the work.

Hire a builder

Consider the following when choosing a reliable builder for your home renovation or addition:

  • Obtain estimates from at least three local builders.
  • Obtain several local references.
  • Require a contract that is specific about the start date of the project and the time to completion.
  • Do not pay for labor that has not been completed.  A request by the builder for money up front for materials is reasonable, along with a payment schedule.
