Choosing a Reliable Drywaller

drywallHanging and finishing drywall can be a messy business.  If you are living in your house at the time of a renovation that requires new drywall be sure to ask what measure the drywaller will take to eliminate dust.  Some professional drywallers use a wet sanding system that works great.  Nevertheless, all professional drywallers should seal the work area with plastic before beginning work.

Do it yourself
With a little practice, you can hang and finish your own walls for any home repair or remodelin project.  There are specific tools required for the job, however they are not expensive.

If you have never worked with drywall before
  • read a few Do It Yourself books to familiarize yourself with the process,
  • get a buddy to help you cut and hang the drywall.
  • practice in the garage and/or start with a small project before you tackle a larger one (obtaining a smooth seamless wall takes practice).
  • seal the work area to reduce the spread of dust throughout your house.

Hire a reliable drywall contractor

When checking references, ask about cleanliness during the job and after.  A quality drywaller will be very careful to contain the dust and will leave a clean work area.

Drywallers typically have several jobs occurring at the same time since they have to allow drying time between coats of mud.  Therefore, you should be sure to discuss the time frame to completion of the job.

Before you pay the final bill, be sure to walk around the house and inspect the work very carefully.  It can be very difficult to get a drywaller to return to a job site to fix a small detail since it may take several coats of mud but only about five minutes for each application.
