Doing it yourself
A great way to save money on a large project is to be your own general contractor, however, it is not easy.  The primary job of a general contractor is to coordinate the timing of the different contractors that will be required to do the work and to monitor the quality of the work.  For this reason, it is a good idea to have some experience or knowlege of the work to be done.

The General Contractor specifically needs to get permits for the renovation, remodel or new construction project, get estimates from each subcontractor for work to be completed, schedule each contractor, perform quality control checks and finally schedule inspections with the town or city.

It is important to maintain frequent communication with each contractor to be sure that they do not forget about you and  put you on the back burner.  Contractors will occasionally fall behind in their work because customers add work to a a job which can potentially push all other jobs back.

To maintain the schedule and complete the project on a timely basis, it is necessary to keep your contractors on schedule.  If one contractor can not work when he/she was scheduled, you might have to reschedule all of the other contractors which can be difficult since most have already booked time for other jobs.  This might mean that your project would move to the end of the line in a contractors list of jobs to complete.

So before you decide to become your own general contractor, be sure you have plenty of free time and a flexible schedule so that you can meet with contractors and inspectors.
