Insulation

Installing insulation is important for your home to perform at its best when heating or cooling.

There are several different types of insulation that can be used depending on the location and access.  Be sure to consult a professional about choosing the correct R-Value and type of insulation.

Installation Tips

Installing insulation is very easy to do and is a great way to save money on a large project. Tools necessary for the job include a box or utility knife, a tape measure and straight edge.  Insulation Image

It is a good idea to wear pants, a long sleeve shirt, goggles and a dust mask.  A respirator will work too, however they can be heavy for this type of work.

Insulation works by creating air pockets and trapping the air.  Therefore, to obtain maximum R-Value it is important to completely fill the void with insulation but not compress the insulation.  If the insulation is compressed it will lose its insulating properties and therefore decrease its R-value.

When installing the insulation in cold climates, a vapor barrier should be placed between the insulation and the living space.  Insulation with a vapor barrier attached is called "Faced" insulation.  If installing unfaced batt insulation, sheets of plastic can be stapled over the insulation as a vapor barrier.
